MINIONS, WINE & MALLORCA. 🍷 This was probably one of the most family-friendly winery visits I’ve had so far. ⬇️

📍Miquel Oliver @moliverbodegas near Petra🇪🇸 is not just one of the oldest operating wineries in Mallorca, but also one of the places that helped shape modern Mallorcan winemaking. They were the first to introduce stainless steel tanks and bottling on the island, while today the 3rd generation continues working with biodynamic farming and native varieties like Prensal Blanc and Giró Ros. 🍇

☝️What made the visit extra special with kids? The cellar is full of giant stainless steel tanks painted as Minions, plus there’s even a small kids’ corner in the tasting room. While we tasted the wines with vineyard views, Chris was completely entertained. 🤗

🍷One wine I would absolutely recommend there is the Son Caló Blanc 2023, made from 100% Prensal Blanc 🍇 — a native Mallorcan variety. Fresh, floral and very easy to drink, with lemon peel, white blossom, honeysuckle and chalky minerality. On the palate it stays light and vibrant with a long citrusy finish. Exactly the type of wine you want during Mediterranean summer heat.☀️

👉 Besides the modern winery outside Petra, they also own a historic cellar in the town centre dating back to 1912, which gives a really nice connection between Mallorca’s wine history and the more modern side of the island.

🍇 GRAPE TALK: EPISODE 45: Callet. Mallorca’s local red variety that stays fresh where others get heavy. Let’s break it down. ⬇️

1️⃣ Callet is a native red grape from Mallorca, cultivated on the island for centuries. You’ll mostly find it in the central and eastern parts, especially around Porreres, Manacor and Felanitx, where the dry, stony soils suit it best.

2️⃣ Traditionally, Callet was used in blends — especially for rosé — together with local grapes like Manto Negro and Fogoneu. Today, it still plays a key role in blends, but more producers are also bottling it on its own.

3️⃣ In the vineyard, Callet is late-ripening and well adapted to Mallorca’s hot, semi-arid climate. What makes it valuable is that it can fully ripen its flavours and tannins while still keeping good acidity — something not many grapes manage in these conditions.

4️⃣ Even though the skins are dark, the wines are not heavy. Callet naturally gives lower alcohol, soft tannins, and medium body. It doesn’t build high sugar levels, which helps keep the wines balanced and drinkable.

5️⃣ In the glass, expect red fruit like raspberry, sometimes with a slightly earthy or herbal edge. The style is often lighter and fresher than you’d expect from a Mediterranean red — closer to a cool-climate feel.

👉 Pro tip: Most Callet is still consumed locally in Mallorca, so if you find a bottle abroad, it’s usually from producers really focusing on quality and identity.

A HIDDEN GEM IN MALLORCA. 🍇 If you want to understand wines of Mallorca, this is where I would start. ⬇️

👉 My first winery visit on the island took me to Vins Toni Gelabert two years ago — and it set the tone for the rest of the week...

Vins Toni Gelabert @vinstonigelabert was founded in 1979 as a passion project. This small family estate in Manacor works with just 6 hectares and around 20 grape varieties🍇. The focus here is clearly on quality and character rather than volume. They follow organic and biodynamic practices, but what you really notice is how natural and honest everything feels.

🤗 What stayed with me the most wasn’t just the wines, but the experience itself. We tasted under an old olive tree with Toni and his wife, while his grandson took my family around the vineyard. No big setup, just genuine hospitality — and that really shapes how you experience the wines too.

🍷 Among the wines, there was one that really stood out: Macabeu 2023 (a 100% Macabeu) — and here’s the thing: only 5 rows exist in their vineyard, and it’s the only single-varietal Macabeu on the island. Stainless steel, long fermentation, and lees ageing.

On the nose, it opens with apple, pear, apricot, and layers of yellow blossom, honeysuckle, and elderflower. On the palate, it’s completely dry but very fresh. Citrus, green apple, pear, and those floral notes carry through with great balance. The finish is long, citrusy, and clean — a very precise wine.

We also tasted a beautiful mix of styles:
🔹️ Torre des Canonge Blanc 2023: 100% Giró blanc, a native variety
🔹️ Illenc Colonia de Sant Pere 2022: 70% Callet, another native grape with 30% Cabernet Sauvignon
🔹️ Pinot Noir 2022: a rarity in Mallorca.

OPENING THE SUMMER SEASON. ☀️ I don't know about you, but here in Vienna🇦🇹, summer weather is already starting to show, so I pulled out a perfect wine for the upcoming heat... ⬇️

👉 I bought this bottle a while ago in Hungary🇭🇺 and chose it with the same system I already explained in my previous video. Lisicza @lisiczabor is a winery I’ve had a crush on for a while, especially because of their Zierfandler 🍇(Cirfandli). Now I’ve found another interesting bottle in the shop, this time made from Grüner Veltliner (Zöld Veltelini). 🍇

📍Lisicza is a family-owned winery with a long history dating back to the 1800s, situated in the small wine region of Pécs🇭🇺, near the more well-known Villány, and focusing on grape varieties like Cirfandli and Grüner Veltliner🍇. The one I tried is the newest member of their selection.

🍷 The wine has a medium-deep lemon colour with a slight silver hue and just a subtle rim on the edge of the glass, which I expected with only 11.5% alcohol. The nose shows ripe citrus aromas — grapefruit, lemon peel — alongside honeysuckle, acacia, a touch of apricot and a hint of cream. The palate is more citrus-driven, with green apple, a touch of elderflower, and white pepper. Very fresh and light, with good balance and a medium, citrusy finish.

☝️A young but ready wine, meant to be drunk fresh and young, chilled to 8–10°C. Perfect as a summer drink — as an aperitif, as a spritzer, or with crisp salads, lighter cheeses, or fresh starters.

1️⃣ Gewürztraminer is an aromatic white grape with pink skins, which is why the wine often has a deeper golden colour. The name comes from “Gewürz” meaning spice, and “Traminer”, linked to the Alpine town of Tramin in Alto Adige.

2️⃣ It comes from the ancient Traminer grape family and is believed to be a mutation of Savagnin. Grapes connected to this family have been grown in Europe for centuries, giving Gewürztraminer a long and fascinating history.

3️⃣ This grape loves cooler climates, but it can be tricky to grow. It ripens early and gains sugar fast, so harvest timing matters a lot. Pick too early and it can feel simple. Pick too late and it may lose freshness.

4️⃣ Its most famous home today is Alsace, where it became one of the region’s signature grapes. Here you can find everything from dry styles to rich late-harvest sweet wines.

5️⃣ You’ll also see great examples from Alto Adige, Germany, Austria, New Zealand, the USA and Eastern Europe. Cooler vineyards and higher altitudes usually help the grape keep its balance and freshness.

👉 Pro tip: Gewürztraminer is one of the easiest grapes to recognise in a blind tasting because it has such a strong personality!

UNDER THE RADAR HUNGARY. 🇭🇺 I recently had the chance to taste the wines of @cseripince from the Pannonhalma wine region, and it reminded me again that some of the best discoveries come from places people talk about the least. ⬇️

Most international wine drinkers know Tokaj first. Maybe Villány too. But Pannonhalma? Much less. That is exactly why I wanted to write about it.

Small region, long history, serious wine culture, and a style that feels fresh and drinkable rather than heavy or overdone. The kind of wines you open with pleasure and finish very easily.

The tasting itself was especially interesting because Cseri Pincészet is a real family project. You can feel that this is not a marketing concept, but people building something together over time.

🍇 And yes… Riesling lovers should pay attention!

They are clearly investing energy into the variety, and it makes sense. Cooler climate, bright acidity, clean fruit, elegant structure. Some wines were lighter and playful, others deeper and more complex.

🍷 Three bottles that stood out for me:

🔹️ Tramini 2023 – juicy, aromatic and full of ripe fruit with lovely texture.
🔹️ Septimus 2020 – the serious one from the Riesling selection, layered, spicy, complex and very long.
🔹️ Legenda 2019 – polished flagship red with Merlot and Cabernet Franc with ripe tannins, berries and spice.

🤗 I always enjoy tastings like this because they remind me how much there still is to discover, even within Hungary.

STANDING IN FRONT OF A WINE SHELF WITH NO IDEA WHAT TO BUY? 🍇 That is why I create these wine educational videos — so you can choose your own bottle with more confidence. ⬇️

📍In this video I show how I actually choose wine in a supermarket: no sommelier, no staff recommendation, no tasting first — just me, the shelf, and the label.

Recently in Hungary🇭🇺 I picked up two bottles from two different stores using the same method I always use: price, producer, region, grape variety and any clues on the label.

🍷The first bottle was a Hárslevelű from Kancellár @kancellarbirtok_somlo in Somló. I wasn’t deeply familiar with the winery, but I had seen positive reviews before, and Hárslevelű already caught my attention. It’s a variety I personally love — aromatic, floral and usually with a lovely rounded texture. The medals on the bottle were not the reason I bought it, but blind-awarded medals can still be a useful sign that I explain in the video.

☝️The second bottle was from Kreinbacher, @kreinbacherbirtok a producer I already knew from their excellent sparkling wines. This time I wanted to try their still white Juhfark, one of Somló’s signature grapes. If I know and trust a producer, that absolutely influences my decision.

💰Price matters too. One bottle was around €6–7, the other closer to €10. It doesn’t automatically mean better or worse — it simply helps me decide what kind of bottle I want that day.

BEST AUSTRIAN WINES IN MARCH 🍷🇦🇹 March was busy — five tastings and a lot of wines. But when I looked back at my notes, a few bottles clearly stood out.⬇️

Weinviertel DAC, Auf ein Glas Burgenland in the Hofburg, Grätzlweinfeste, Kékfrankos Bormustra… a good mix of regions and styles, and these are the ones I would happily open again.

☝️Why these? Because they show what Austrian wine does really well: freshness, balance, and a clear sense of style — without overcomplicating things.

Some are very easy to drink, others have more structure and ageing potential, but all of them feel precise and well made. The kind of wines that are interesting enough to think about, but still enjoyable without analysing too much.

A SMALL PLACE THAT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE.🍾 This was the moment Prosecco started to feel serious. ⬇️

☝️@proseccofollador is based right next to Valdobbiadene, in the heart of the DOCG area. The family has been making wine since 1769, now in the 9th generation, still fully family-owned by four siblings. Around 40 hectares of vineyards, working both DOC and DOCG, but the focus is clearly on these hillside wines.

What I liked is that they don’t try to overcomplicate Prosecco — they just show it properly. Clean, precise, and very connected to the place.

🍇One wine that really showed this was Nani dei Berti, a Rive di Col San Martino DOCG.

If you remember from the last Grape Talk🍇 episode, Rive means a very specific, small area. In this case, Col San Martino — only a handful of vineyards, steep slopes, all handwork. Lower yields, more focus, more detail in the wine.

🍷In the glass, this already feels different. The nose is fresh and slightly flinty at first, then opens into lemon peel, candied pear, elderflower, white blossoms, and a small touch of white pepper.

On the palate, it has more weight than a typical Prosecco. Medium-plus body, very fine and elegant bubbles, and around 8 g/l residual sugar, so still quite dry but not sharp. The flavours follow through clearly, with citrus, pear and floral notes, finishing long with a slightly spicy edge.

👌What stood out is the texture. Thanks to their method (cooling the grapes before pressing and longer time on the lees), the wine feels a bit more creamy, more structured, but still very fresh.

☝️This is where Prosecco starts to change from “easy sparkling” into something more about place and detail. Same grape, same region — but a completely different experience.

🍇 GRAPE TALK: EPISODE 43: Prosecco — an Italian 🇮🇹 sparkling wine you might know, but there’s more to it than just bubbles.🍾 Let’s break down the different types and what makes each one special. ⬇️

1️⃣ Prosecco DOC – Light, fresh, and fruity, this is the wine most people drink as an aperitif or in cocktails. Grapes come from flat vineyards across Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. By 2020, the DOC covered 24,450 hectares, with 1,169 winemakers and 347 Prosecco houses. Prosecco Rosé also falls under DOC, made with Glera🍇 plus a touch of Pinot Noir🍇 and spending at least 60 days on the lees.

2️⃣ Prosecco Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG – These come from handpicked grapes grown on steep slopes between Valdobbiadene and Conegliano. The hillside gives the wine more structure, finer bubbles, and stronger aromas.

3️⃣ Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG – Just across the river, Asolo is another hillside area with really good terroir. Wines here are a bit more delicate and elegant, often showing floral and citrus notes. The DOCG area covers about 721 hectares.

4️⃣ Prosecco Valdobbiadene Superiore Rive DOCG – “Rive” means specific steep-slope communes in Conegliano-Valdobbiadene. Only 43 communes can use this label, and each one gives wines with a slightly different taste depending on the exact vineyard.

5️⃣ Valdobbiadene Superiore di Cartizze DOCG – The pinnacle of Prosecco.👌 Cartizze is just 107 hectares, but is considered the best place to grow Prosecco. Hand-picked grapes on perfect slopes make wines that are richer, more aromatic, and really special.

☝️Quick tip: You can tell the classification by the bottle neck label: Light blue = DOC, brown = DOCG.
