Cuvée Marie-Louise from Vignobles Chaigne & Fils

I would like to start this new feature with a very exceptional wine. Hence my choice this Bordeaux white blend because I think we still don’t appretiate enough the white wines of this region. Even when someone talks about white Bordeaux, the first variety that comes to mind is Sauvignon blanc.

But there are some other grapes we have to mention: Semillon and Muscadelle. There are a dozen others too but these three are the main grapes in a blend which will give some lovely characteristics to the bottled wine. I have written already about a couple of new varieties in the region, you can read that here.

This cuvée is a blend of 40% Semillon, 40% Sauvignon blanc and 20% Muscadelle which can probably explain again my choice and the complex flavours and aromas why I love this wine so much. We are talking about a fairly aged wine from the 2009 vintage.

My photo from last year when I have tried it the first time

I have already tasted this same bottle in June 2020 with my Coravin so I was really excited how the wine has changed since then. You can read my tasting notes from last year here. Now this is what I have found in my glass:

Still a lovely vivid golden color with medium plus viscosity. The nose is intense and complex with ripe and dried exotic fruits (pineapple, lychee) with lemonpeel, orange, stonefruits, pear, elderflower, white pepper, croissant and the same well integrated oaky vanilla notes.

So in all the spices came a little bit more forward for me since last year.

The acidity were still high with medium alcohol and a full-bodied, creamy texture on the palate. The flavours from the oaky aging dominates with some yeasty and buttery character, complimented with lots of lemon, apricots, pineapple, pear and lychee in the very long finish.

I keep my opinion that it is an excellent quality wine that can age way more than I though the last time. I think we can keep it for another 5-8 years easily to see how it evolves! Unfortunately I have finished this bottle now so I have to find another one to see if I am right in 5 years.

Don’t hesitate to share with me your experience (if you have) about this wine or another great white Bordeaux you came across! I would be delighted to hear your opinion!
