As a hungarian who lives abroad for a while now I was excited when about 6 months ago they offered me a wine trip to Tokaj from London with one of our suppliers.
That was my first organized wine tour and even my first wine trip in Tokaj, which is a region just next to the city where I was born.
We have been in the town of Mád, the capital of this wine region with 1200 hectares under vine. Our host was the Mád Wine Company who makes some really amazing single vineyard wines mainly from Furmint and Hárslevelű, the two most important grape varieties in the region.
They have entry level wines from Furmint, this is what we sold in the restaurant by the glass, and people loved it! Furmint is a very versatile grape and the wine is very food friendly, pairs perfectly with cold starters and seafood as well.
On the first night in Tokaj we had a tasting of their range of wine, my favourite was definetly the Szent Tamás single vineyard Hárslevelű from Percze. This is one of the best site in the vineyard and Hárslevelű is a more aromatic grape than Furmint. The wine was complex, mineral with a lot of stone fruit character and a good acidity level with long finish.
The second day we had the chance to visit the vineyards of Szent Tamás, there are 6 first class sites within, and had a tasting again with the view of this magical place. We could see the volcanic soil and the differences between the layout of the vineyards and sites . That was a truly amazing experience!
If I will have a chance to go back for another tour and taste their delicious Szamorodni and Esszencia again I won’t hesitate a second. I hope to see our hosts very soon and thank you for the hospitality!
Have you already been to Tokaj? Or tasted a wine from there? How did you liked them?
