Happy International Tokaji Aszú Day! 🥂 Better Happy International Tokaji Aszú Day! 🥂 Better late than never! This week, I had the absolute pleasure of tasting 50 Aszús from 25 wineries spanning the 2000-2009 vintages. It was quite a journey through sweetness, balance, and brilliance! ✨ This experience inspired me to dive into the best Tokaji Aszús of the decade. Here’s your Vintage Cheat Sheet to help you decide what to drink, save, or hunt down! 2000:❗️❗️❗️Legendary! The ultimate classic. Bold, concentrated, and perfectly balanced with dried apricot and marmalade notes. A must-try if you can find one! 2003:❗️Excellent. A hot, dry year produced intense, opulent wines. Rich and unforgettable, showing their best right now. 2005:❗️❗️Outstanding! The perfect mix of fruit, acidity, and structure. Limited production, but so worth it. These are built to last. 2006:❗️Excellent. Elegant and balanced, with a fruit-forward charm. Sweetness meets just the right zing of acidity and spice! 2007:❗️Excellent. An unpredictable year, but with great results! These Aszú wines can still mature for more complexity. 2008:❗️❗️❗️Legendary! This year was an absolute masterpiece. Deeply concentrated, complex wines—some of the best in this decade! 2009:❗️Excellent. Rich, luscious, and a touch lower in acidity, but when it’s good, it’s great. A treat to enjoy now or later. HAPPY 40TH ANNIVERSARY TO THUMMERER WINES!🥳 And HAPPY 40TH ANNIVERSARY TO THUMMERER WINES!🥳 And what a celebration we had...⬇️ 🍷Vilmos Thummerer, the visionary founder and soul of @thummererpince began this journey in 1984 by renting just 7 hectares of vineyards. That’s where it all started. Today, his legacy lives on through his daughter and grandchildren, who continue his work with passion and success, now cultivating over 100 hectares of vineyards.🍇 ☝️Vilmos achieved countless accolades during his lifetime. He was named “Wine Producer of the Year”🏅 in Hungary in 1994, and the winery itself was honored with the prestigious “Wine Cellar of the Year in Hungary”🏅 award in 2011—just to mention a few. 🤗 I have tasted and shared many notes on their wine selection; however, it was the first time I got to visit the winery, the vineyards, and celebrate this huge milestone with them!🥂 4️⃣0️⃣ years of remarkable success. We started the day with a tour of the Csókás vineyard, talking about the viticulture and the future, including existing and new varieties.🌿 👉 Next, we explored the old, one-of-a-kind cellar where all the fermentation, aging, and maturation happens in a truly traditional environment. Afterward, we enjoyed a delicious lunch, featuring their finest cuvées, Bull’s Bloods, and a special red blend for the occasion.🍷 ➡️ Speaking of special blends, the Étosz Superior 2017🍷—a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah—was created specifically for this anniversary, and deserves another dedicated post to it❗️ 😍 Thank you, @thummererpince for letting me be part of this unforgettable day. SPARKLING WINE FROM THE CAPITAL OF VIENNA? 🇦🇹 Yes, and what a value! ⬇️ 💁‍♀️Not a usual photo style from me, but I think it pairs well with this Sekt. What do you think? I have talked about @sektaustria Sekt before and wanted to show the second one I tasted with @gios_wine_journal on our last IG Live. ☝️This Sekt Brut from @weingutmayerampfarrplatz is classified as the classic Sekt Austria. That means the grapes have to come from Austria, it can be bottle- or tank-fermented, and it has to spend at least six months on the lees. For traditional method Sekts, it is a minimum of nine months. 🍾This particular Sekt comes from a vineyard selection of Grinzing, Hernals, and Wiener Nussberg with mainly loess soil. These areas are near the 19th district of Vienna.🇦🇹 It is a blend of Grüner Veltliner and Welschriesling, and the second fermentation took place in steel tanks. However, the wine spent nine months on the yeast. 👉 Mayer am Pfarrplatz is one of the region’s most renowned winemakers, combining their long heritage with certified organic viticulture.🌿 You can really taste that expertise in this bottle. 🥂If you’re into lighter, citrusy, and refreshing sparkling wines, this one’s for you! Think lime peel, grapefruit, herbs, white pepper, all combined with a touch of sweetness, good perlage, and a refreshing aftertaste. 👌This bottle screams “aperitif”and I would recommend it for the holidays without a doubt. A TRAVEL BACK IN TIME. Not too far back—just hal A TRAVEL BACK IN TIME. Not too far back—just half a year—but worth every moment! We’re heading straight to the vineyards of Carnuntum.🇦🇹 ➡️ Let’s rewind to my spring visit, where I had the privilege of exploring the single vineyard Spitzerberg with none other than Dorli Muhr @dorlimuhr a well-know super star from Carnuntum. Her roots and philosophy draw her back to create world-class Blaufränkisch 🍇 in this unique corner of Austria, and she does it with pure passion at @weingutdorlimuhr 🍷After touring the vines, we sat down for a vertical tasting of Ried Spitzerberg Blaufränkisch. The wine is crafted parcel by parcel, untouched by new oak, allowing the character of the place and variety to shine through. 👉 Dorli’s philosophy aligns perfectly with this approach: she’s all about capturing freshness and a true sense of place in her wines.🍷And the secret? Old vines. In her search for the best variety to reflect the soil and terroir, she’s found her match in Syrah.🍇 🌿 She owns 12 hectares, with 90% planted to the iconic Blaufränkisch, including some vines up to 70 years old, giving the wines that distinctive character. Her beloved Syrah, along with a touch of Merlot, fills the remaining space. ☝️If I had to sum up Spitzerberg in three words, they’d be: limestone, wind and heat. These extreme climate conditions (if you've felt the wind there, you know!) give Blaufränkisch🍇 a spicy, fresh, juicy profile with smooth, ripe tannins and flavors of cherry and blueberry—not to mention the amazing aging potential.🍷 👌It was fascinating to compare the nuances across single parcels from vintages between 2015 and 2020. With their freshness, it’s no surprise that these wines found their way to the wine lists of the best restaurants around the world, pairing beautifully with a wide range of dishes. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. They say it in real LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. They say it in real estate, but in wines, it may hold even more importance. This is especially true for Tiare... ⬇️ Tiare @tiare_vini owns around 10 hectares of vineyards, with parcels located in two of the most prestigious DOC areas of Friuli – Collio and Isonzo. 🇮🇹 👉 These areas lie between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, resulting in a significant difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. This provides the grapes 🍇 with ideal conditions to ripen while maintaining their natural freshness. ☝️Not to mention the soil types (marly soils in Collio and gravelly soils in Isonzo), which further help preserve that freshness. It is here that Roberto Snidarcig crafts wines with distinctive character.🍷 👌I had the chance to discover this a few months ago at the wine bar of @ilcavallucciovienna and would like to share my favorites: ▪️Collio Malvasia: Super ripe stone fruits backed up by white blossom flowers and acacia; slight butter and brioche notes; a creamy palate with vibrant freshness and a long apricot aftertaste. ▪️Sauvignon Blanc: Italian herbs with basil, rosemary, green bell pepper, and gooseberry, all continuing on the palate with an oily texture. Great balance between acidity and alcohol, with a long herbal finish. ▪️Rosemblanc: Super ripe fruits of golden apple, yellow pears, honeysuckle, and mirabelle, with a hint of curry. The palate is just as complex and spicy, with medium-plus body and ripe stone fruits that carry into a never-ending finish. Excellent quality wine. ▪️Pinot Nero: A rather spicy and more serious wine with red cherries, cranberry, blueberries, and a medley of spices: coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, toffee, and mint. Youthful and light, with the same flavors on the palate as on the nose, high acidity, smooth medium tannins, and a spicy aftertaste. HARVEST EXPERIENCE IN TOKAJ.🇭🇺 What did we p HARVEST EXPERIENCE IN TOKAJ.🇭🇺 What did we pick? It wasn’t Furmint, let me tell you that... ⬇️ A week ago, I spent a wonderful long weekend in Tokaj at Sárospatak and visited the Harsányi winery for the very first time. However, this wasn’t the usual visit—this time, I went to do some work!🍇 I received an invitation to their harvest festival, which took place on the Ciróka vineyard, one of their most important single vineyards. These couple of hectares have belonged to the family since 1850. We can find Furmint, Hárslevelű, and Yellow Muscat on these slopes. We harvested the Yellow Muscat🍇, and it was already a late harvest in the middle of September! The bunches were full of dried grapes. Yes, climate change plays a big role here too, but we still have to wait and see about those noble rot conditions. That will certainly come a bit later.💁‍♀️ I enjoyed the work;🤗 it’s always great to see firsthand the hard work that goes into our favorite bottles.🍾 Of course, we also visited the cellar, where the main focus is either on keeping the fresh aromas using only stainless steel tanks or allowing the single-vineyard selection wines to mature in Hungarian oak barrels for added complexity.👌 ☝️I tasted a good deal of their selection and was really impressed by the quality, especially the potential for these wines to mature over a longer period. Most of the single-vineyard wines were from the older vintages of 2017, 2018, and 2019, and they still showed vibrant freshness and complexity, still awaiting those tertiary aromas. SEKT TIME!🍾 Do you know what Sekt is? ⬇️ 👉 In German-speaking countries, Sekt refers to sparkling wines, especially when you're talking with novice wine lovers from those regions or even neighboring ones. ☝️However, when discussing specific countries in this region, for a sparkling wine to be called Sekt, there's much more that goes into it. Let’s talk about Austrian Sekt!🇦🇹 ❗️Sekt Austria is a protected origin classification with three tiers and strict rules: ✔️Sekt Austria, ✔️Sekt Austria Reserve, and ✔️Sekt Austria Große Reserve. 👌I explained all three tiers in our latest IG Live with Giovanna @gios_wine_journal but today I want to highlight this Brut Rosé Reserve by Weingut Loimer @weingutfredloimer from that tasting.⬇️ 🥂 This wine holds the ✔️Sekt Austria Reserve classification with very high standards. It is a blend of 60% Zweigelt, 30% Pinot Noir, and 10% St. Laurent from the vineyards of Langenlois and Gumpoldskirchen. 🌿 It’s an organic and biodynamic wine, made using the traditional method. It primarily contains the 2020 vintage (70%) and the 2019 vintage,🍇 with a small amount of reserve wines dating back to 2011. This particular bottle was sealed with the lees in September 2021 and was disgorged in December 2023.🍾 👌 That extended time on the lees gave this sparkling rosé its beautiful buttery, brioche-like flavors, while the Zweigelt🍇 and St. Laurent🍇 provide sweet cooking spices, plums, and raspberry. The Pinot Noir🍇 adds fine structure, high acidity, and a never-ending finish with a fine perlage.🥂 ☝️I highly recommend this Sekt Rosé with pasta in tomato sauce, salads, or a shrimp cocktail. It’s a very food-friendly sparkling wine. 2009 VS. 2011 – AGEING POTENTIAL IN BURGENLAND 🍷Is it worth the wait? ⬇️ ☝️Spoiler alert: Yes! But there’s more to this tale. A couple of weeks ago, I had the chance to attend a tasting featuring 12 wines from two legendary vintages from this iconic red wine region in Austria.🇦🇹 We experienced firsthand how these wines taste after more than a decade of ageing. ANOTHER GRAPE TO LOOK OUT FOR IN AUSTRIA!🇦🇹 ANOTHER GRAPE TO LOOK OUT FOR IN AUSTRIA!🇦🇹 White wine lovers, pay attention! Austrian white wines are not just about Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, and let me prove it to you...⬇️ Last week, I visited the @weinsteiermark tasting in Vienna, and while this region is famous for its Sauvignon Blancs🍇, I got interested in something else. ☝️Weißburgunder, or as you may know it, Pinot Blanc, accounts for a third of the plantings in Styria, just as in Lower Austria. This is the youngest member of the Pinot family, a mutation of Pinot Gris, all originating from the noble red grape, Pinot Noir.🍇 🤔 Why might you want to try these wines from Steiermark, and why am I so fascinated by them? AUSTRIA ⬇️ 😍 On Saturday, we went live with Giovanna from @gios_wine_journal and talked about sparkling wines from Italy and Austria. She shared interesting facts and wines from an up-and-coming DOCG in Piedmont, Alta Langa. I was tasting and talking about the different styles and classifications of Austrian Sekt production.
